Iron oxide pigments are the most commonly used colored pigments worldwide.
They come in the basic colors yellow (FeOOH), black (Fe3O4) and red (Fe2O3), but also mixed as orange, beige or brown tones.
The powder pigments are primarily used in the construction industry.
Due to their chemical composition and structure, the pigments mentioned are insoluble in water and diluted acids, resistant to cement and alkali and absolutely weather and light stable.
Inorganic Pigments is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of synthetic iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments.
The high-tinting-strength products in the high performance Bayferrox ranges are suitable for almost universal use in the paints and coatings sector.
The pigments are characterized by their high level of quality and consistency and fulfill the highest sustainability levels worldwide.
The group of high performance pigments encompasses Bayferrox iron oxide pigments with the crystal structures of hematite (red), goethite (yellow) and magnetite (black) in narrow specification limits.
Intensive milling reduces the percentage of aggregates in the pigment and increases that of the primary particles.
Referred to as micronization, this process results above all in better dispersibility compared to non-micronized pigments.
In the case of red and black Bayferrox® pigments, the micronized versions are identified by the letter ‘M’ following the product number, and micronized Bayferrox® yellow types are identified by the number ‘3’ preceding the product number.
The line of high performance special pigments offers not only tight color tolerances, but also additional advantages for use in paint and coating systems, such as increased heat resistance, improved flow behavior or avoidance of the silking effect.

Pigment Black 11
Pigments iron oxide production Bayferrox - Germany.
At the moment they are the highest quality pigments.
The content of the main substance (iron oxide) is 98.3%.
Product from the iron-oxide process for the removal of sulfides from gases.
In this process gases are passed over a mixture of iron(III) oxide and wood shavings.
Liable to spontaneous heating.
This heat may cause ignition.
Easily ignited by sparks or heat from external sources.
Used for precipitating copper or lead from solutions of their salts and in electric furnace steel operations.
Pigments are supplied as a powder, suspension or granulate.
Compared to powder, suspensions and granules are better processed: they flow and do not powder.
On the other hand, powder pigment also has advantages: Bayferrox 318 can be used universally and Bayferrox 318 is cheap! "compact pigment".
Compact pigments unite the good properties of the forms in which the pigments have been delivered so far, namely: They flow similarly to granules or suspensions and do not dust; They can be used universally and their price is just as affordable as the powder pigment Today, when we have compact pigments for coloring building materials, we no longer have to use powder pigments.
The starting point of raw materials for the production of compact pigments are powder pigments.
By using a binder in the next production phase, the pigments are processed into a flowing material.
Compact pigments consist of particles with a diameter of 0.5 mm.
Persistence and Compatibility Bayferrox 318 are absolutely permanent colors for all uses in the artist's palette.
Bayferrox 318 is compatible with all other pigments and can be used in all environments with good results.
Oil Suction and Grinding Bayferrox 318 absorbs moderately low amounts of oil.
The oil absorption rate is 10-15 parts by weight of linseed oil to 100 parts by weight of pigment.
If the measurement were in grams, Bayferrox 318 would require 100 grams (by weight) of pigment to grind 10 to 15 grams (by weight) of linseed oil to form a hard paste.
Makes an average drying oil paint and forms a tough, highly flexible film.
Bayferrox 318 is an iron oxide pigment developed in the 20th century.
Also known as black iron oxide, magnetic oxide, Pigment Black 11, and ferrous iron oxide (Fe3O4), Bayferrox 318 has no known health hazards and is considered non-toxic by an ASTM light fastness rating.
Bayferrox 318 is more opaque and less toxic than other black pigments.
Artists' paint manufacturers rated Bayferrox 318 as one of the most satisfactory black pigments for acrylic paints in terms of opacity, lightfastness, and durability.
Bayferrox 318 is named after Mars, the god of war and protector of iron.
This oxide powder has high color purity and contains ferrous metal derivatives.
Ideal for use in paint, plastic, coating, ink formulation.
When developed as a coating, this pigment does not bleed.
Bayferrox 318 is a UV resistant product, so Bayferrox 318 will not fade over time.
For applications where color is not a major player, the scientific properties of iron oxide pigments are where this component stands out the most.
Resistant to chemical degradation, Bayferrox 318s are suitable for security applications.
Being weatherproof means repairs or touch-ups are not necessary and your costs can stay low.
However, if you decide that color plays an important role in your finished product, this pigment will create a fantastic utilitarian, industrial look in building applications such as concrete production.
Bayferrox 318 is a recent development in modern pigments and was unknown to artists' palettes before the nineteenth century.
The source of Bayferrox 318 is usually from an iron ore called magnetite.
Magnetite, also known as lodestone, is a ferrous iron oxide (ferrous oxide) that is heavy, black in color and opaque.
Theoretically, black iron oxide contains slightly more ferrous metal than red oxide, but not as much as yellow oxide.
The natural mineral may contain varying amounts of manganese, sulfur, clay and silica.
Bayferrox 318 are absolutely permanent colors for all uses in the artist's palette.
Bayferrox 318 is compatible with all other pigments and can be used in all environments with good results.
Bayferrox 318 absorbs moderately low amounts of oil.
Bayferrox 318 is not considered toxic, but care should be taken when using dry powder pigment to avoid inhalation of the powder.
Processing of Bayferrox 318:
Compact pigments can be used in the same way as powder pigments.
However, the dosing of compact pigments is simpler, because the binder in BAYFERROX has a positive effect on the rheological properties of the suspension.
Dispersion of Bayferrox 318:
The condition that the pigment can be used universally is good dispersion even in difficult conditions.
We know that the pigment in the fine material is more difficult to disperse.
In fine dry mixtures (mortar, plaster, silicate brick), the powder pigment is also difficult to disperse.
Examples from practice show that compact pigments can be used in these systems without restrictions.
A comparative test was performed to mix the powder pigment and the compact pigment in the motor.
We prepared the mortar in a laboratory mixer at a small number of turns and varied the mixing time.
Castings were made from the prepared mass and allowed to harden.
The criteria for evaluating the dispersing properties are the differences in the shade - delta E between the produced samples and one specially prepared cause in which the pigment is optimally mixed.
Such reference causes are made with pigmenton powder and mixed for 120 seconds.
Mortars made with powdered pigment and with compact pigment do not differ in color at all after only 20 seconds of mixing.
Analogously, dispersion in dry mixtures for silicate bricks was investigated.
If Bayferrox 318 is done in the usual conditions that we encounter in practice, Bayferrox 318 means that the mixing lasts longer than one minute, there are no restrictions on the use of compact pigments.
Powdered pigment has no advantages in this regard.
In such conditions, for example, granules are known on the market so farthey did not stir.
In the meantime, we have of course supplemented the described laboratory testing in practice by examining the behavior of compact pigments directly in the plants of mortar and facade manufacturers.
Here, too, the compact granulate has been shown to disperse without difficulty even in the cheapest grouts.
