Ceteareth-2 helps to form emulsions by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Ceteareth-2 is also used to decrease the thickness of liquid cosmetics and personal care products.
Ceteareth-2 is a polyethylene glycol ether of Cetearyl Alcohol (q.v.).
CAS Number: 68439-49-6
EC Number: 500-212-8
The INCI names ceteareth-n (where n is a number) refer to polyoxyethylene ethers of a mixture of high molecular mass saturated fatty alcohols, mainly cetyl alcohol (m = 15) and stearyl alcohol (m = 17).
The number n indicates the average number of ethylene oxide residues in the polyoxyethylene chain.
These compounds are non-ionic surfactants that work by attracting both water and oil at the same time, frequently used as emulsifiers in soaps and cosmetics.
Functions of Ceteareth-2:
1. Emollient - Softens and soothes the skin. Helps with skin conditioning.
2. Emulsifier - Allows water and oils to remain mixed together to form an emulsion.
3. Surfactant - Reduces the surface tension to allow mixtures to be formed evenly.
Emulsifier is a specific type of surfactant which allows two liquids to mix together evenly
Feature in Ceteareth-2:
W/O emulsifier, an ingredient that enables the formation of an emulsion.
Emulsion is a physicochemical form that is created by combining (mixing) the water phase with the oil phase.
Examples of cosmetic emulsions are creams, lotions, balms.
Ceteareth-2 acts as a rheology modifier (i.e. improves consistency) in washing preparations containing anionic surfactants, thanks to the formation of the so-called mixed micelles.
Cosmetic effect:
Wetting agent - facilitates the contact of the washed surface with the washing solution, thus facilitating the removal of impurities from the surface of the skin and hair
Extraction of Ceteareth-2:
Ceteareth-2 is an ethoxylated compound of a mixture of fatty alcohols that act by attracting water and oil at the same time.
Ceteareth-2 is frequently used as an emulsifier in soaps and cosmetics.
Benefits of Ceteareth-2:
Highlights Ceteareth-2's emulsifying function that makes the skin flexible and softens it.
On the other hand, Ceteareth-2 reduces the interfacial tension of cosmetic products and contributes to a uniform distribution in the application of the product.
In cosmetics and personal care products, Ceteareth ingredients are used in skin care products, moisturizers, hair conditioners, suntan and indoor tanning products and hair dyes, colors, and tints.
Applications of Ceteareth-2:
Ceteareth-2 is soluble in oils and organic solvents.
Ceteareth-2 can be used as W/O emulsifier, chemical fiber softener and silk post-treatment agent.

Function(s) of Ceteareth-2 in cosmetic products:
SURFACTANT - CLEANSING:
Surface-active agent to clean skin, hair and / or teeth
SURFACTANT - EMULSIFYING:
Allows the formation of finely dispersed mixtures of oil and water (emulsions)
Background information on use in cosmetics:
Surfactants are so-called detergent substances and have a major significance in cosmetics for the cleansing of the skin and hair.
Surfactants are substances which, based on their molecular structure, are able to reduce the surface tension of a liquid.
In this way it is possible that two actually not mixable substances, such as oil and water, can be finely mixed.
Because of their properties, surfactants have manifold uses in cosmetics: they can cleanse, produce foam and act as emulsifiers and mix substances with one another.
In shampoos, shower gels and soaps, surfactants are, for instance, used to wash fat and soil particles with water off from the body.
EC Number: 500-212-8
CAS Number: 68439-49-6
Surfactants are also used in toothpaste.
Here they promote during tooth cleaning the rapid and full dissolution and distribution of the paste in the mouth.
The surfactants used in cosmetic products are primarily produced synthetically on the basis of vegetable raw materials.
Surfactants are often used in combination to equally meet all desired requirements – like dissolution of soil and formation of foam in combination with a good skin tolerance – in the best possible manner.
Through a skilled combination of a surfactant – viewed on its own – with unfavourable skin tolerance but a very good soil removal property with a very mild, skin protecting surfactant altogether a product with good cleansing properties and the same good skin tolerances is obtained.
Polyethylene glycols (INCI: PEG-...) are poly condensation products of ethylene glycol, or polymerisation products of ethylene oxide.
The number added to the name refers to the mean number of ethylene oxide units in the substance.
The consistency of the PEG derivatives is increasingly solid with a growing degree of polymerisation.
PEGs with a mean molar mass of up to 600 g/mol are liquid, up to 1,000 g/mol wax-like and from 4,000 g/mol solid wax-like substances.
By mixing solid and liquid components, products of a creamy consistency are obtained which are used as water-free and water rinse-off bases.
With growing molar mass water solubility and hygroscopicity (ability to absorb moisture) of the polyethylene glycols decrease.
Emulsifiers are often used in cosmetics as excipients.
They allow actually unmixable components like oil and water to be brought in a permanently stable emulsion.
In this way both aqueous and oily care and active ingredients can be used in one and the same product in cosmetics.
Emulsifiers are able to do that since their molecules consist of a lipophilic and a hydrophilic part. In this way they can reduce the interfacial tension which actually exists between two incompatible substances like fat and water.
Emulsifiers are, more particularly, used for creams, lotions and cleansing agents.
At present emulsifiers are, however, more than only excipients which keep an emulsion stable.
Fatty acid esters on the basis of sugar, lecithin or glycerin monodistearate contribute, for instance, to improving the moisture balance of the skin and are, therefore, also considered as cosmetic active ingredients.

More safety Information of Ceteareth-2:
CIR Safety Review: The CIR Expert Panel considered previous findings from the safety assessment of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), several fatty alcohols (Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, and Stearyl Alcohol), and Steareths to supplement the data on the Ceteareth ingredients.
These data indicated little evidence of toxicity.
Data on the PEG ingredients indicated that when used on burn patients, PEGs may result in kidney effects.
Therefore, the CIR Expert Panel also concluded that the Ceteareth ingredients should not be used on damaged skin.
Ceteareth-15 (10% in formulation) was minimally irritating after a single dermal exposure.
In clinical studies, Ceteareth-15 (1.5% in formulation) produced minimal irritation when tested in both 4- and 21-day patch tests, and was not a sensitizer when tested (1.35% in formulation) in a repeat-insult patch test.
Small amounts of 1,4-dioxane, a by-product of ethoxylation, may be found in the Ceteareth ingredients.
The potential presence of this material is well known and can be controlled through purification steps to remove it from the ingredients before blending into cosmetic formulations.
What the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is doing to assure that cosmetics do not contain unsafe levels of 1,4-dioxane.
The Ceteareth ingredients may be used in cosmetics and personal care products marketed in Europe according to the general provisions of the Cosmetics Regulation of the European Union.
