Where is hexylene glycol found?
Hexylene glycol is used as a softening agent, humectant, and solvent in cosmetics and hair care products.

Hexylene Glycol helps as a solvent to maintain a liquid consistency in a chemical component.
It has another function of decreasing viscosity, i.e. it makes other ingredients less likely to stick together, giving a fluid an even consistency.
Cosmetics Manufacturers use it in some of our Hair Colorants such as Liquid colors to keep the viscosity low over shelf-life and ensure a stable product performance and an easy application.

Rise in demand for an emulsifier, viscosity-reducing agent, and surfactant in cosmetics and personal care products.
This, in turn, is driving the global hexylene glycol market. Hexylene glycol helps in emulsifying oils and fats and suspends dirt & oil in skincare formulations.
Hexylene glycol is being used as a viscosity-reducing agent, as it creates thinner formulations by reducing the layer of heavy formulations.
These factors are expected to boost the demand for hexylene glycol during the forecast period.
Hexylene glycol, if added in high concentration in skincare formulations, can cause skin and eye irritation.
Furthermore, hexylene glycol’s airborne exposure limit is 25 ppm, if this limit is exceeded, it can irritate the nose and throat and cause coughing and wheezing.
These factors are anticipated to hamper its sales during the forecast period.
Rising demand for hexylene glycol in paints & coatings and hydraulic fluids is likely to create opportunities for hexylene glycol manufacturers.

Hexylene glycol, given its low volatility and high viscosity, is finding immense utilization in paints and coatings.

The compound is also becoming commonplace in drugs as a formulating agent and pharmaceutical excipient

Hexylene glycol is generally used in the cosmetics & personal care industry for eye makeup products - eye creams, anti-wrinkle products, skin care eye blossoms, and concealers - owing to its functionality as a surfactant, emulsifier, and viscosity reducing agent.
The organic compound attracts oil, dirt, and other impurities accumulated on the skin (surfactant), helps droplets disperse and form a stable emulsion (emulsifier), and aids the formulation to spread easily throughout the skin (viscosity reducing agent).

Manufacturers must thus tap this value-creating potential to shape overall market performance

Capturing over half of overall demand, the usage of hexylene glycol as a solvent across various sectors - oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, and textiles - would remain prominent.
This swelling adoption is characterized by its excellent miscibility and low evaporation rate attributes.
On the other hand, top-line growth of the global chemical sector is fueling the consumption of hexylene glycol as a chemical intermediate to produce finished products for various end-use industries.
Increasing scope of application in antifreeze purposes is further offering white spaces to manufacturers.

Solvent application is considered to be a dominant segment in the market.
Hexylene glycol is a clear, colorless liquid, and is miscible in nature.
Owing to these characteristics, it is considered as a direct solvent.
Growing application in pharmaceuticals and household & personal care products is likely to surge the demand for hexylene glycol in the future.

Hexylene glycol is used as a solvent in the paints & coatings industry.
Due to rise in construction activities across the globe, the consumption of hexylene glycol will surge over the forecast period.
However, increasing demand for bio-based products can be a barrier to the growth of the global hexylene glycol market.

There has been a rise in the demand for viscosity reducing agents, emulsifiers, and surfactants in personal care, grooming, and cosmetic products.
Hexylene glycol reduces the viscosity of creams, lotions, emollients, and moisturizing products so that they can be easily applied on the skin.
Increasing sales and related production of end-use personal care products, in turn, is expected to boost the demand for hexylene glycol over the forecast period.

Laboratory uses
In the laboratory it is a common precipitant and cryoprotectant in protein crystallography.
Since hexylene glycol is compatible with polar and nonpolar molecules, it competes with the solvent in a crystallography experiment causing the protein to precipitate.
Hexylene glycol is so effective in protein crystallography because its amphiphilic nature and small, flexible structure allows it to bind to many different locations on a protein secondary structure including alpha helices and beta sheets.
When hexylene glycol binds to these different locations, water is removed and the protein crystals anneal, which prevents ice formation during cryocrystallography techniques.
Incorporation of hexylene glycol into solution has been known to improve the resolution of X-ray diffraction making protein structures easily identifiable.
Additionally hexylene glycol is not a strong denaturing agent and thus does not significantly alter the structure of a protein during the crystallography procedure.

Like related diols, it forms borate esters.

Hexylene glycol functions as a surfactant, emulsifier, and a viscosity-reducing agent in many different cosmetics and personal care products.

Origin
Hexylene glycol, also known as 2-Methyl-2,4-pentanediol, is an organic compound that can be classified as a glycol.
Glycols are a class of alcohols that contain two hydroxyl groups, which can also be called a diols.
Hexylene glycol is a clear, hygroscopic liquid with a mild, sweet odor.

Hexylene glycol can also be synthetically produced.
It is manufactured by the condensation of 2 molecules of acetone to produce diacetone alcohol, which is further hydrogenated to produce hexylene glycol.
This is then purified by distillation.

Hexylene glycol is used in the formulation of hair and bath products, eye and facial makeup, fragrances, personal cleanliness products, and shaving and skin care products at concentrations ranging from 0.1% – 25%.

Functions
Hexylene glycol is added to cosmetics and personal care products based on its functions as a surfactant, an emulsifier, and a viscosity-reducing agent.

Surfactant is the short term for surface active agent.
Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface tension between two substances, such as two liquids or a liquid and a solid.
In skin care products, surfactants work to degrease and emulsify oils and fats and suspend soil, allowing them to be washed away.
This is possible because while one end of the surfactant molecule is attracted to water, the other end is attracted to oil.
Thus, surfactants attract the oil, dirt, and other impurities that have accumulated on your skin during the day and wash them away.
Due to these properties, hexylene glycol can be found in many different cleansers and body washes.

Hexylene glycol also functions as an emulsifier.
An emulsifier is needed for products that contain both water and oil components, for example, when oils are added to a water-based formula.
According to EFEMA, when water and oil are mixed together and vigorously shaken, a dispersion of oil droplets in water (and vice versa) is formed.
When shaking stops, however, the two phases start to separate.
To address this problem, an emulsifier like hexylene glycol can be added to the system, which helps the droplets remain dispersed and produces a stable emulsion.

As an emulsifier, hexylene glycol consists of a water-loving hydrophilic head and an oil-loving hydrophobic tail.
The hydrophilic head is directed to the aqueous phase and the hydrophobic tail to the oil phase.
Once again, hexylene glycol reduces the surface tension by positioning itself at the oil/water or air/water interface, which has a stabilizing effect on the emulsion.

Finally, hexylene glycol functions as a viscosity-reducing agent.
The term viscosity corresponds to the concept of “thickness”, for example, honey has a higher viscosity than water.
As a viscosity-reducing agent, hexylene glycol works to thin out heavy formulations and create a thinner, more spreadable product.

Safety
According to EWG, hexylene glycol is rated as a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest health risk and 10 being the highest.

The safety of hexylene glycol has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel.
The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that hexylene glycol is safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products.

Despite the approval by the CIR Expert Panel, hexylene glycol can be an irritant, especially at higher concentrations.
As a class, the glycols can produce mild to severe ocular irritation with hexylene glycol producing the most severe irritation.
According to Cosmetics Info, a number of product formulations containing these glycols at concentrations up to 21.4% have been tested in various human skin irritation and sensitization assays.
The degree of irritation produced depended upon the particular product.
Furthermore, there was no correlation between the degree of irritation and the concentration of the glycol present in the product.
There were no reactions indicative of skin sensitization to these glycols in any skin sensitization assays and no suggestions of phototoxicity or photosensitization.

A study published in the journal Contact Dermatitis examined the effects of hexylene glycol when used by people with eczema and concluded that the presence of hexylene glycol did not cause a significant increase in irritation.

Hexylene glycol is used in a wide variety of skincare products for its applications as a solvent and preservative.
Moisturizers contain many active ingredients which may spoil or lose their efficacy over time.
Natural preservatives like hexylene glycol fight back against this process.
Hexylene glycol is also a solvent or a “viscosity agent” which can help to create a less viscous, more pleasant end product.

Much like butylene glycol, hexylene glycol has been proven to be safe for skincare.
Hexylene glycol is also FDA approved for usage as food additives or for use in “food adjacent” products such as packaging and/or labeling.
Hexylene glycol is often paired with butylene glycol as the two ingredients amplify the positive effects of the other.

Hexylene glycol (HG) is a colorless liquid produced industrially from diacetone alcohol by hydrogenation.
It is miscible with water, hydrocarbons, and fatty acids.

Hexylene glycol has many uses including hydraulic brake fluids, printing inks, a coupling agent for textiles, fuels and lubricants, emulsifying agent, cosmetics, and cleaners.

The antimicrobial properties of three glycols, - propylene glycol, hexylene glycol, and 1,3-butylene glycol - against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes A, Streptococcus mitis, and E. coli were studied in vitro.
Within 20 h, 10% and 30% hexylene glycol in fresh tryptic soy broth were able to kill all the micro-organisms listed above.
Five percent hexylene glycol showed some antimicrobial properties but the 1% agent had no effect.
Thirty percent 1,3-butylene glycol and 30% propylene glycol were approximately as effective as 10% HG.
The results speak in favour of using hexylene glycol in cosmetic and dermatological vehicles instead of propylene glycol and 1,3-butylene glycol.
