Locron S is therefore used in a wide range of antiperspirant and deodorant formulations. 
Aluminum hydroxychloride has been used on a growing scale for many years throughout the world as an active ingredient in antiperspirant products. 
Locron S is generally well tolerated also on long-term use. 
Although Locron S is beeing well tolerated, dermatological trials should be carried with the final antiperspirant/deodorant formulation to establish beyond doubt that no skin irritation is caused by the combination of products, each of which is in itself non-irritant.

The Locron grades are widely used in perspiration-reducing preparations. 
Locron P is most suitable for anhydrous products like powder-sprays, suspension-sprays or sticks. 
Locron S may be used to generate aqueous solutions of aluminum chlorohydrate. 
Locron L, Locron LIC and Locron LIF are used for roll-ons, pump-sprays, emulsions and aqueous gels. 
All Locron grades can also be incorporated in skin lotions, skin creams and shaving lotions to achieve a slight adstringent effect. 


Usage Concentration 
For antiperspirant products using Locron S as the sole ingredient, the active concentration of aluminum chlorohydrate is chosen in the range of 5 – 25 %. 
If combined with other active ingredients, the active con-tent can be lowered accordingly. 
For aqueous formulations like pumpsprays or roll-ons a 24 h effect is generally seen at about 10 % active concentration (i.e. 20 % Locron L or Locron LIC). 


Solubility 
Solid Locron types (Locron P, Locron S) are soluble in water up to approx. 60 % (m/m). They are almost in-soluble in absolute ethanol and only sparingly soluble in higher molecular weight monovalent and multivalent alcohols. 
Liquid Locron types (Locron L, LIC, LIF) are miscible with ethanol or glycerol in any ratio. 
Locron S should be used rather than Locron P for pre-paring aqueous solutions because the former dissolves more rapidly in water. 
Moreover solutions of Locron S greater clarity, although optimum clarity is ob-tained only after the solution has been left to stand for about 24 hours. 
Locron LIC and Locron LIF are especially suited for clear formulations, because they show improved clarity compared to Locron L. 
Additionally, due to the reduced iron content of Locron LIC and Locron LIF, problems with yellowing of clothes are minimized. 


Stability 
Locron S is stable in an acid aqueous medium, but alumi-num hydroxide is precipitated if the pH is adjusted to above pH 5 with base. 
If heated, it releases water and hydrochloric acid. Rising temperatures lead in turn to the formation of aluminium hydroxide gels, γ-aluminium oxide and finally α-aluminium oxide (corundum). 

Storage 
Clariant guarantees 2 years storage stability for all Locron types stored in originally sealed containers. 
Locron S and P are hygroscopic and should therefore be kept in a dry place. 
Once containers have been opened, their contents should be used without delay since there is a risk of agglomeration caused by the adsorption of moisture from the atmosphere. 
Agglomerates are frequently the cause of valve blockage in aerosol products

Aluminum chlorohydrate is a group of water-soluble aluminum complexes with the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. 
It is included up to 25% in over-the-counter hygiene products as an active antiperspirant agent. The primary site of action of aluminum chlorohydrate is at the level of the stratum corneum layer, which is relatively near the skin surface. It is also used as a coagulant in the water purification process.


Uses
Aluminum chlorohydrate is one of the most common active ingredients in commercial antiperspirants. 
The variation most commonly used in deodorants and antiperspirants is Al2Cl(OH)5.

Aluminum chlorohydrate is also used as a coagulant in water and wastewater treatment processes to remove dissolved organic matter and colloidal particles present in suspension.

Synthesis
Aluminum chlorohydrate can be commercially manufactured by reacting aluminum with hydrochloric acid. 
A number of aluminum-containing raw materials can be used, including aluminum metal, alumina trihydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate and combinations of these. The products can contain by-product salts, such as sodium/calcium/magnesium chloride or sulfate.

Because of the explosion hazard related to hydrogen produced by the reaction of aluminum metal with hydrochloric acid, the most common industrial practice is to prepare a solution of aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH) by reacting aluminum hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. The ACH product is reacted with aluminum ingots at 100 °C using steam in an open mixing tank. The Al to ACH ratio and the time of reaction allowed determines the polymer form of the PAC n to m ratio.

An antiperspirant is a chemical agent that reduces perspiration or sweating. 
The active ingredients of roll-on, spray and powder formulations are traditionally the metallic salts aluminium chloride and aluminium chlorohydrate. 
These are formulated into preparations of varying strengths. 
More concentrated solutions are used to control excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Newer generation antiperspirants contain aluminium zirconium compounds. 
These are better tolerated by the skin and are less likely to cause irritation or aggravation to razor burn.

Diphemanil methylsulfate powder may also be used to reduce perspiration. 
It is particularly useful on an amputation stump to reduce irritation by a prosthesis.

Deodorants are not antiperspirants. Deodorants do not prevent sweating. 
Their aim is to mask the smell produced by sweat-eating bacteria. 
An antiperspirant preparation may contain a deodorant.

How do antiperspirants work?
Aluminium-based antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat ducts, thereby reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. 
Aluminium salts are soluble as long as the formulation is acidic (low pH). 
When they are applied to the skin and come in contact with sweat, the pH rises causing the aluminium salts to precipitate out and form a plug over the sweat glands. 
Sweat continues to be produced by the sweat gland but it just isn't able to reach the surface of the skin.

Diphemanil methylsulfate is a drug that opposes the action of the parasympathetic nerves that control sweat production.

How do you use an antiperspirant?
A higher concentration antiperspirant is usually more effective than a low concentration or aluminium-free preparation. 
However, increasing the strength can also increase the potential for side effects. 
A couple of simple rules apply to their use.

Apply to dry skin, after a cool shower at bedtime. 
During sleep sweating is limited and the active ingredients have a better chance of being absorbed into the sweat glands. 
Wash off in the morning.
Apply on a regular basis as directed by your doctor. 
Initially, this may be 7-10 nights in a row, then reducing to every other night for one week. 
When improvements are seen, patients can move to a maintenance schedule of using it once every 7–12 days. 
Over time reapplication may be needed even less frequently.
Where can you use an antiperspirant?
Antiperspirants are often the first line of treatment for underarm hyperhidrosis as they are readily available from the pharmacy or supermarket. 
Antiperspirants may also be used in other sites of the body that tend to sweat excessively. 
If standard preparations fail, stronger strength preparations are available at your pharmacy.

Sweat is a dilute salt solution produced by eccrine sweat glands spontaneously or in response to heat, exercise and stressful events. 
Eccrine sweat is initially odourless but can start to smell if bacteria get a chance to break down the stale sweat. 
The eccrine glands are distributed over the entire body but are most numerous under the arms and on the palms and soles.

Apocrine sweat glands are located under the arms, around the breasts and in the groin. 
After puberty, they produce a thick secretion that contains pheromones, the “personal scent” that most people find unpleasant. 
In addition, bacteria that normally live on the skin break down apocrine sweat and this produces offensive body odour. 
Body odour is worse if there are more bacteria present or the level of apocrine sweat production is high. 
Antiperspirants also help to reduce apocrine sweat production.

ATAMAN Aluminum chlorohydrate IN WATER TREATMENT: Flocculant to remove colloidal impurities, phosphate and filtration aid.

MODE OF ACTION:
At pH values above 5 Aluminum chlorohydrate starts to form very fine 
Aluminiumhydroxide precipitates which are most suitable to trap particulate impurities in swimming pool water. 
Colloidal impurities, which make the water turbid, are difficult to remove because of their very small particle-size.
The poly-cationic character of Locron and the high charge-density force the colloidal impurities to flocculate as a result of destabilization. 
The formed precipitates and the Aluminiumhydroxide gels form stable floccules, which are easy to remove by filtration or settling.
Compared with Aluminiumsulfate and Polyaluminiumchloride the destabilization behavior of Locron on colloidal impurities is outstanding. 
Phosphate could also be eliminated under formation of water-insoluble Aluminiumphosphate. 
Because of the low content of anions (chloride) in Aluminum chlorohydrate the pH value will not be affected and corrosion of stainless-steel basins it not an issue.

APPLICATION
The dosage of ATAMAN-Aluminum chlorohydrate to the swimming pool water should work continuously with a solution containing 1-5 wt-% of the solid salt dissolved in water. 
Dosing pumps should be used to bring the flocculant into the circulation pipes. 
Due to the fast flocculation well-formed floccules can be separated in the connected filter. 
The consumption of flocculant depends on temperature, impurity level (number of attendance), environmental conditions, on the used installation and circulation quantity.

ADVANTAGES OF ATAMAN-Aluminum chlorohydrate
As result of the very high basicity Aluminum chlorohydrate inserts less anions (chloride) compared to other flocculants like Polyaluminiumchloride or Aluminiumsulfate. 
This brings a huge advantage for avoiding corrosion and drop of pH.
Compared to Aluminiumsulfate the Locron consumption is much lower avoiding accumulation of salt.
The high efficacy of Locron increases the durability of the filtration system by a factor of 2 – 4 and reducing the number of recovery cycles significantly. 
This reduction of filter recoveries and the reduced amount of water for rinsing is related to cost savings.
