Melapur 200: (melamine polyphosphate) is a salt of melamine and polyphosphoric acid.

Melapur MP, Melapur 200 and Melapur MC:
Melapur 200 is a halogen-free flame retardant.
As a white powder Melapur 200 opens up new and broader color schemes for flame retarded glass fiber reinforced PA 66.
The mechanism is based on intumescence.
At exposure to fire a strong and stable char is formed which protects the polymer and prevents further flame propagation.
The good balance between intumescence & thermal stability of Melapur 200 provides a processing window of up to 320 °C.
Melapur MC is a halogen-free flame retardant.
Addition levels are relatively low, giving good economics,
Mechanical properties and lower specific gravity compared to compounds containing halogen/antimony flame retardant systems.
Being halogen free also results in significant advantages in terms of fire safety, i.e. lower smoke density, lower smoke toxicity and less corrosion.
Lower corrosivity offers advantages both in the processing stage and in case of a fire.

Applications of Melapur MP:
Melapur 200 is a melamine based halogen free flame retardant for glass fiber reinforced polyamide and polyester (e. g. PBT).
Melapur MC is used as an effective flame retardant, primarily for electrical & electronic applications (connectors, switches, housings, etc) made from polyamide or TPU.
In unfilled or mineral filled compounds it gives a UL94 V-0 rating; in glass filled system only a UL94 V-2 rating is possible.
Melapur MP is primarily used in intumescent flame retardant systems for paints and polymers, combining both the melamine and catalyst functionality.
Other applications are in thermosets, both unsaturated polyester and epoxies, and in textile treatment.
In self-charring materials such as cellulose or epoxy, melamine phosphates can be used as such without addition of other flame retardants.
Melapur MC flame retardants:
Melapur MC flame retardant is a salt of melamine and cyanuric acid.
It has a higher thermal stability than pure melamine, remaining stable up to about 320ºC.
For this reason, Melapur MC flame retardant is often applied in polymers with higher processing temperatures.
Above 320ºC, it undergoes endothermic decomposition to melamine and cyanuric acid, acting as a heat sink in the process.
The vaporized melamine acts as an inert gas source diluting the oxygen and the fuel gases present at the point of combustion.
Examples of suitable polymers: all nitrogenbased polymers such as polyamide 66, 6, 11, 12, thermoplastic polyurethane and polyurethane
Melapur MP flame retardants:
Melapur MP flame retardant is a salt of melamine and phosphoric acid.
Above 200 ºC, it reacts to release water, resulting in a heat sink and leaving the phosphorous component available to react synergistically with other flame retardant components.
Therefore, Melapur MP flame retardant is often used in blended flame retardant systems for applications, such as coatings and sealants.
Melapur 200 flame retardants:
Melapur 200 flame retardant decomposes endothermically above 350ºC, acting as a heat sink to cool the polymer.
The released phosphoric acid further reacts with the polymer to form a char and inhibit the release of free radical gasses into the oxygen phase.
Simultaneously, nitrogen species released from the degradation of melamine intumesces the char to further protect the polymer.
Melapur 200 flame retardant was originally developed to suit the high processing temperatures associated with the compounding of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics.
Over time, Melapur 200 flame retardants have also evolved into other applications, either replacing existing flame retardant systems, such as ammonium polyphosphate (APP) or permitting development of new formulations such as flame retardant epoxy resins or phenolic resins with improved flame retardancy
