Applications of Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate:
A high volume example is sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate.
This is perhaps best known as the laxative docusate, however its main use is as a surfactant for which it finds common use in personal-care and household-care products, often under the name Aerosol-OTs.
Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate is unusual in that it is able to form microemulsions without the use of co-surfactants, and it has a rich variety of aqueous-phase behavior including multiple liquid crystalline phases.

Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (known as AOT) is a commercially available surfactant commonly used in agrochemicals.
Besides the principal diester surfactant, Sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate contains two surface-active isomeric monoester by-products, which may influence the surfactant’s overall properties.
This work investigates whether the purity of the surfactant affects its ability to stabilize an agrochemical formulation.
The concentrations of the diester and two monoester impurities in batches of commercial AOT product from several suppliers were determined quantitatively by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry.

The tested batches showed different contents of the monoesters.
Samples of a model agrochemical formulation containing the AOT product formed more sediment during storage when the content of monoesters in the surfactant was high.
The supplier of an commercial AOT product could be traced by analysis of the monoester content of either the raw product or the aged agrochemical formulation.

The utilization of conventional water-soluble surfactants for the stabilization of CO2 foams has been limited by the low injectability of low-permeability reservoirs.
In this study, the anionic surfactant sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) was used as the CO2-soluble surfactant to stabilize CO2 foams in the presence of ethanol.
The phase equilibrium relationships of the AOT/ethanol/CO2 system and the partition coefficient of AOT between supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) and water were measured through a fully visible pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) cell.
In addition, the effects of the ethanol content on the partition coefficient and interfacial tension (IFT) were studied.
Furthermore, a laboratory apparatus was developed to measure the viscosity and injection performance of AOT dissolved in an aqueous or SC-CO2 solution and SC-CO2 foams.

The experimental data show that addition of ethanol can significantly improve the solubility of AOT in SC-CO2 and increase the partition coefficient of AOT.
The IFT tests show that the ethanol content affects the critical micelle concentration (cmc) and IFT at cmc (γcmc) differently: with ethanol addition, γcmc decreases, while the cmc first decreases and then increases.
The dissolution of AOT in SC-CO2 with ethanol could lead to a 3-fold increase for SC-CO2 viscosity, while the formation of SC-CO2 foam could result in an increase for viscosity of approximately 50–200 times.
Finally, the core flooding results show that dissolved AOT in SC-CO2 could significantly improve the surfactant injectivity in tight rocks and interact with the formation water in situ to form SC-CO2 foams, controlling the mobility of the CO2.
In addition, the performance of SC-CO2 foams could be governed by altering the ethanol content to adjust the surfactant partition coefficient.

Sodium sulfosuccinate esters:
Sodium sulfosuccinate esters are organic compounds with the formula NaO3SCH(CO2R')CH2CO2R where R and R' can be H or alkyl groups.
They comprise a large class of surfactants and emulsifiers used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and cleaning agents.
They are colorless salts.
These materials can be further classified into monoesters (R' = H, R = alkyl) and diesters (R and R' = alkyl).

Synthesis:
They are produced by treatment of maleic anhydride with alcohols.
The resulting mono or diesters are then treated with sodium sulfite, which, concomitant with protonation, adds to the C=C bond.

The effect of a fluorinated sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (aerosol-OT, AOT) analogue surfactant (sodium salt of bis(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5- octafluoro-1-pentanol) sulfosuccinate) on the interfacial layer of supercritical CO2 + water and supercritical CO2 + Ni-plating solution systems was investigated by measuring via the capillary rise method.
These interfacial tensions were measured in the pressure range of (0.1 to 20.0) MPa at multiple temperatures for each of five interfaces: (1) CO2 + water system at (293.15, 298.15, 311.15, and 344.15) K; (2) CO2 + Ni-plating solution system at (313.15, 328.15, and 344.15) K; (3) CO2 + Ni-plating solution + F-AOT surfactant (0.1 and 0.3 mass %) system at (313.15, 328.15, and 344.15) K; (4) CO2 + Ni-plating solution + ethanol (10 and 20 vol %) system at 328.15 K; and (5) CO2 + Ni-plating solution + F-AOT surfactant (0.1 mass %) + ethanol (10 vol %) system at (313.15, 328.15, and 344.15) K.
The reliability of the apparatus was confirmed by comparing the experimental data with literature data for the CO2 + water system at (311.15 and 344.15) K The individual addition of the F-AOT surfactant and ethanol reduced the interfacial tension for the CO2 + Ni-plating solution system; however, the simultaneous addition of these two substances caused the opposite effect on the interfacial tension.
