DISPERSANT ASP 42

Dispersant ASP 42 is an APEO and Formaldehyde free, highly effective dispersant for anionic pigments and extenders in aqueous systems. 
Dispersant ASP 42 is compatible with all common synthetic emulsions, creates little foam and is effective in a wide pH range.

Dispersant ASP 42  is an APEO-free, formaldehyde-free, acrylic polymer. 
Dispersant ASP 42 is an ammonium salt of polycarboxylic acid. It is a highly effective dispersant for anionic pigments and extenders in aqueous systems. 
Dispersant ASP 42 shows compatibility with synthetic emulsions, foams and is effective in a wide pH range. 
Dispersant ASP 42 requires short grinding time.

Dispersant ASP 42 is generally added in emulsion paints with 0,1 - 0,5% calculated on pigments / extenders. 
The actual quantity required essentially depends on the type of the pigments / extenders used and should be determined from case to case (determination of the optimum quantity of the dispersing agent). 
Dispersant ASP 42 can be added alone or combined with nonionic compatibilizers. 
If more than 1% of Dispersant ASP 42 is added, it should be tested whether the water sensitivity of the film increases. 
In emulsion paint procedure, Dispersant ASP 42 normally has to be added before addition of pigments / extenders.

Dispersant ASP 42 is usually added to emulsion paints at 0.1 - 0.5%, calculated as pigments / fillers. 
The actual amount  of Dispersant ASP 42 required depends greatly on the type of pigments / fillers used and must be determined on a case-by-case basis (determining the optimal amount of dispersing agent). 
Dispersant ASP 42 can be added alone or in combination with non-ionic compatibilizers. 
If more than 1% of ASP 42 is added, check if the film's sensitivity to water increases. 
When applying emulsion paint, Dispersant ASP 42 should normally be added before adding pigments / fillers.

PRODUCT HANDLING – STORAGE – SHELFLIFE of Dispersant ASP 42:
To ensure safe storage of Dispersant ASP 42, containers should be well sealed to prevent the water evaporation and skin forming. 
Dispersant ASP 42 emulsion must be stored between 5 - 25°C for a maximum of 12 months and freezing must be avoided.

The use of dispersants in oil spill response advantages:
-By removing the oil from the surface it helps to stop the wind effect on the oil slick’s movement that may otherwise push the surface slick towards sensitive areas (often the shoreline).
-In contrast to containment and recovery, dispersants can be used in stronger currents and greater sea states.
-Dispersant ASP 42 is often the quickest response option.
-Dispersant ASP 42 reduces the possibility of contamination of some resources sensitive to the floating oil (surface slick) such as sea birds and mammals.
-Dispersant ASP 42 inhibits the formation of "chocolate mousse".
-Dispersant ASP 42 enhances the natural degradation of oil.
-Dispersion does not produce wastes to be disposed. 

FACTORS AFFECTING THE ACTION OF DISPERSANTS
Regardless of the application technique and dosage used, dispersant action will primarily be determined by:
-type of oil to be treated;
-contact dispersant/oil;
-mixing;
-weather conditions. 

Dispersant/oil contact
In order to achieve a good dispersant/oil contact, a dispersant needs to be sprayed onto the floating oil in such a way as to reach the surface of oil and not to penetrate through the oil layer. 
These goals are achieved by combining appropriate spraying technique and appropriate droplet size. 
Optimal droplet size is considered to be in the range of 350 and 1000 µm, or approximately 700 µm. 
Smaller droplets will be carried away by wind and may never reach the oil, while the bigger ones penetrate through the oil layer and enter directly in contact with the water without having sufficient time to bind themselves to the oil. 
Application spraying system should be chosen to reach such requirements. 

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DISPERSANTS
Some physical properties of dispersants may have practical consequences on the use of these products (application, fire hazard, conservation). 
For this reason some countries include in their approval procedure some requirements concerning the viscosity and/or pour point, flash point, and stability/shelf life.
