The main HPAA production route is as follows.
Phosphorus acid solution reacts with glyoxylic at 100-110°C for 4-10hours. 
And then input water to prepare HPAA aqueous solution. 
This reaction can be 1-step forward and starts from PCl3 hydrolysis.
Some research is studying to use microwave irradiation to replace the heating process for reducing energy consumption and reaction time.

A coordination-induced film-forming method was developed to construct 2-hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid (HPAA)-Zn²⁺ complex conversion layer (HPAA-Zn²⁺ layer for short) on cold-rolled steel (CRS) substrate. 
Moreover, the incorporation of Mo component into the HPAA-Zn²⁺ layer can significantly improve the uniformity and anticorrosion properties. 
The results showed that Mo-incorporated HPAA-Zn²⁺ layer displayed the best anticorrosion performance when the molar ratio of HPAA/Zn²⁺ was 1:1, the film-forming time was 10 min, and the concentration of molybdate was 0.1 wt%. 
In addition, energy dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) results demonstrated that the Mo-incorporated HPAA-Zn²⁺ layer was mainly composed of ZnO and HPAA-Zn²⁺ complex and also confirmed that Mo-O-P bonds occurred between molybdate anion and HPAA molecule.

The invention provides a method for preparing 2-hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid (HPAA). 
The method comprises the following step of: reacting phosphorous acid and glyoxylic acid under microwave radiation, wherein the microwave power is 200-600W, and the reaction time is 30-60 minutes, so that an aqueous solution of HPAA is obtained. 
The method is high in reaction yield up to over 95 percent generally, simple in process flow and low in cost, the reaction is easily controlled, three wastes are avoided, pollution is avoided, and the method is suitable for industrial production
